Schema Building
Just in case you didn't know, building schema before you teach a lesson is one of the greatest ideas that anyone has ever come up with in teaching. If a student cannot make connections to their own lives, or knowledge already gained, it will be that much harder to get them to a. care b.learn and c. make further connections. In my guided reading the brief lesson before I had them reading was on text to self. I know that had I not told them to think of their favorite book, and then to think of why they like the main character so much, to then ask them how that relates to them, would they have been able to truly grasp how you can compare a text to your own life, or in this case, the "self." Don't skip this step in teaching a lesson.
