Day 2

I am feeling overwhelmed, not quite sure if teaching is for me. These children seem bored. I would be too if all I did was constant worksheets right after another. It is not the teacher's fault. As we sit in the teacher's lounge for lunch, teachers all talk about how they don't feel like they can actually teach anything anymore because they need to be feeding information specifically for testing. I can understand that because of time constraints, creativity gets taken out a little. But that's why I became a teacher; to teach students in a new and creative way that lets them become involved in their own learning.

Today is a little different. A teaching resource comes in and with the class instructs how to write a story including a main idea, beginning, middle, and end. The students are not catching on to ques and not quite understanding the questions being asked of them. A guessing game begins. Mrs. Mac and I discuss with our mentor teacher how we could have written a story all together as a class. Making it completely their own, then going back and fixing it, or "fine-tuning" it together. Suggestions could be written on the board, then as a class they pick which one they feel will help make their story the best.
The resource helps them to use big words that are very descriptive and fun. I thought this part was great.

She teaches the students a new managment skill that I think will serve useful for this class.
After learning and discussing at the rug the call teacher calls out these numbers:
1,2,3,4,5
1= stand up
2= fold arms, mouths shut
3= walk to... (desk, cubby, door)
4=sit down...(walk, go, start)
5= get out what you need

The students responded really well to this. They like the order, but they are also a very energetic group that needs a lot of involvement in their learning.
